The Lotter font is a unique blackletter typeface inspired by the beautiful initials of a medieval book printed in 1515 by Melchior Lotter in Leipzig. The book, A treatise by the Dominican friar-writer Marcus von Weida on the Brotherhood of the Holy Rosary, features hand-colored engravings of religious and liturgical themes, which served as the foundation for this stunning font.

The History Behind the Font

Melchior Lotter, a renowned German printer, was part of a family of printers closely tied to the Reformation. His innovative approach to typography included using Roman types for Latin texts and reserving Gothic types for German texts. This distinction contributed to the development of the Lotter font family, which comprises two styles: Dropcap and Regular.

Using the Lotter Font Family

The Lotter font family is designed to help you achieve a medieval-style text effect. To accomplish this, use the Dropcap style as a decorative element at the beginning of a paragraph or section.
